1971 - The Chicago Six; John Logan, Brian Harris, George Smith, Ed Coleman, Anthony Harris, and Stan Kirtley; formed the Purdue Society of Black Engineers.
1974 - The Purdue Society of Black Engineers became a national body, the Society of Black Engineers.
1975 - The first national conference was held at Purdue. 48 students representing 32 schools chose the organization symbol, wrote a rough draft of the constitution, divided the organization into six regions, elected John Cason as the Nat. Chair and changed the name to the National Society of Black Engineers.
1975 - Purdue became the National Headquarters
1976 - NSBE was incorporated in Austin, Texas by Barry Barell, Pamela Mukolu, and William Johnson, II.
1977 - The first regional conference was held by Region One at MIT
1979-80 - NSBE held a voting position on the United States (UN). Voting privileges are assigned on a yearly basis.
1982 - The first headquarters site was established in Alexandria, VA.
1985 - The society established its own computer network, NSBENET
1986 - Rev. Jesse Jackson addressed NSBE at the National Conference in Boston, Massachusetts.
1988 - The Board of Corporate Affiliates was established; PCI was launched; and the first National Strategic Plan was announced.
1990 - NSBE Jr. Chapters are started; the NSBE Bridge was published; and the NSBE Journal became the NSBE Magazine
1991 - The NSBE Academic Excellence committee was formed
1992 - The first European NSBE chapter is founded in London, England
1993 - Region II started the first USTR program
